Zoom out to see the route. This is a map I laid out of sites I’m interesting in visiting, and some possible routes to get there. I highly recommend doing this; not only was it a lot of fun, it also gave me a good idea of where things are in relation to each other, which helped a lot researching flights and train routes. Note that all the labeled items are approximate locations, especially the routes – I didn’t need to place things at a particular street corner to get a feel for the trip.
A visual layout of planned points, possible extra excursions, and major sites.
Exclamation points: places that I consider priorities, around which I’m planning the trip
Green pins: expected itinerary points (I will likely go here)
Yellow pins: cities worth visiting (I may go here if it’s feasible)
Gold houses: major historical/archaeological sites and good day trip locations
Volcanoes: Places of particular natural beauty, and rare ecological areas
Red pins: transit hubs, access points and convenient intermediary sites (I will pass through here between other locations)
Airplanes: major regional air hubs (for plotting potential air trips)
People: locations of friends and relatives abroad
Blue route: currently what I’m expecting to do
Red routes: the easiest alternate paths, usually bypassing certain parts.
Green routes: extensions that don’t replace part of the route
